Celebrating 26th Santiago Mountain Film Festival, the SMFF became one of the new members of the IAMF this year, which includes 23 countries, from the most prestigious operators, that have successfully made a name for itself and has become the main reference point for those who produce, make, promote and conserve mountain film. The Santiago Mountain Films competition, presents some of the best national and international mountain adventure, cultural, and environmental films each year.
The SMFF has been presenting for the last 25 years, the best of the BANFF Mountain Film Festival World Tour, celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, an industry leader in the celebration of Mountain Culture, a flagship program of Banff Centre.
The SMFF also brings the Reel Rock Film Tour, the best climbing films on the planet for the past 2 decades. One of this year’s big films, “Riders on the Storm”, capturing big wall history, with the first free ascent of the iconic route, in Torres del Paine, by Siebe Vanhee, Sean Villanueva-O’Driscoll, Nicolas Favress, and Drew Smith.
The SMFF invites some of the great legendary alpinist and climbers from around the world. In keeping with tradition, Sir Chris Bonington will be this year’s special guest. his career has included nineteen expeditions to the Himalayas, many of them first ascents, or first British ascents! One of the most notable climbs in Chilean alpine history, was the 1963 expedition, the first ascent of the Central Towers in Torres del Paine, with Don Whilans.
