Prologue: A Winter Attempt on the Roof of Patagonia,
In the Northern Patagonian Ice Field, in Chilean Patagonia, stands Mount San Valentín, the highest peak in Patagonia. To date, only two expeditions have successfully reached its summit in winter, making every attempt an exceptional challenge in which preparation, logistics, and decision-making are essential.
This documentary follows the entire process of a winter expedition to Mount San Valentín: from planning and preparing the equipment to the complex logistics required to spend weeks deep in one of the most remote regions of Patagonia, and ultimately undertaking the summit attempt.
As the expedition progresses, the mountain’s conditions begin to challenge the expectations and objectives set from the outset. The summit is ultimately not reached, but the expedition finds its true value in the process and in the decisions made in the face of a changing and demanding environment: assessing conditions, recognizing limits, and determining when to continue and when it is necessary to turn back.
Prologue: A Winter Attempt on the Roof of Patagonia, offers a look at the work behind a large-scale expedition and at the less visible dimension of mountaineering: one in which success does not always mean reaching the summit, but also knowing how to make the right decisions to return safely.
